About Event

Funnyvaar – A Comedy “Shanivaar” Theatre Festival

Some work hard and some hardly work through the week. But everyone looks forward to the Saturday evening. An evening where you can chill with your loved ones or just be yourself.

To celebrate this spirit of the Satuday evening, Pooja Sehgal Batta along with Merry Go Round Entertainment bring to you “Funny-Vaar” – A Uniques Comedy Theatre Festival. An evening where you can enjoy and engage with 3 comedy plays. The first two plays (first show) are based on 2 masterpieces by 2 master storytellers of the Hindi literature world, Munshi Premchand & Harishankar Parsai. They have been packaged as a Single show – “Premchand aur Parsai”. The third play (second show) is an international classic comedy that has been adapted in Punjabi for the first time. Anton Chekov’s Proposal.

All of these plays have been showcased earlier in different forums and have received a lot of appreciation from the Audience. For the first time all 3 of them are being performed in a single evening. Truly a delight for regular theater audience as well as not so regular theater audience. All you need to enjoy these shows is an appetite for laughter.

The details of the plays are as follows –

Show 1 – “Premchand aur Parsai” – 5:30 to 7 – 2 comedies by 2 master storytellers

Munshi Premchand’s Do Behnien –

“Witty characterization of two sisters pursuing their separate lives. See the two clash in the inimitable, humorous, sarcastic style and language of Premchand. It’s unique adaptation to fit into today’s world maintaining the era and style of Premchand with a relevant & pertaining question ‘ Where is Happiness?’ ”

Harishankar Parsai’s Anshan –

Anshan or hunger strike has deep roots in the Indian society and Indian psyche. In addition to Gandhi, various others have used the hunger strike option during the Indian independence movement and post independence also. But if one does hunger strike to usurp the other’s wife? Sounds crazy – isn’t it. Yes, Bannu is keeping fast unto death to get his love interest, married Savitri. In this hunger strike, he gets support from various Baba , Swami and social & political leaders and his hunger strike becomes a national issue. This is a social and political satire that makes a mockery of hunger strike and the system.

Show 2 – Anton Chekov’s “The Proposal” – 7:30 to 8:40 PM

Someone once said, ‘marriage is an adventure-like going to war’.

How different can a proposal be then?

Confusions & chaos prevail when the innocent Veeraji is cleverly steered by his man Friday Ramu to ask for their neighbours’ daughter’s hand for marriage. Little does Veeraji know about Ramu’s own love interest, Dulari-the domestic help at the neighbour’s! The neighbour, Jaman Singh is only happier to agree to the alliance & calls out for his daughter- Nimmo. Nimmo is a stark contrast of her sugar-coated image created by both Ramu & Jaman Singh.! Veeraji(now left alone in the room for a friendly chat with Nimmo)begins a polite conversation but leads to a situation where the battle lines are drawn.

Will Veeraji be able to woo Nimmo? Will Jaman Singh finally get to celebrate the evening? What will happen to Ramu & Dulari?

Based on Anton Chekhov’s hit play “The Proposal” this Punjabi adaptation explores the same Chekhov’s plot but with a lot of Punjabi tadka. This is a first such adaptation of this classic play, conceptualised & directed by Saurav Padhi. The Punjabi translation has been penned down by Jagdip Singh. Adding to the flavour, this play also features a popular, but withering, traditional Comic Stand Up Art – “Punjabi Phands” in a bit contemporary avatar – a comic and lyrical way. Lyrics penned down by Jagdip Singh & Rishabh Tripathi.
